Always a nice surprise, never the reason to make things.

I’ve always loved making things. I remember winning a few certificates at school for drawing and writing, but the first time I really felt like I’d made something others appreciated was in college. I designed this poster, spent hours crafting a world out of plasticine, took it into the studio to shoot, and carefully printed the words onto Safmat. It was a lot of craft for one poster. Then, out of nowhere, it won a student award.

That feeling was delightful. But for me, awards have never been the point. The goal is always solving a problem or creating something that people enjoy. If an award comes after that, it’s an smashing surprise.

Here’s a list of some of the surprises I’ve had after solving some problems. And yes, i really did win a big purple chair.
